Anti trans messaging flopped in 2022, too. “Kamala is for they/them” worked because voters thought Kamala didn’t understand their problems, not because they hate trans people specifically.
NEW: Republicans went all in on anti-trans messaging for the 2025 election, inspired by Trump’s “Kamala is for they/them” ad
It didn’t work — and now they’re trying to figure out why
Democrats, meanwhile, learned how to respond to this messaging

The same day the US Supreme Court allowed Trump to force trans people to misgender themselves on passports, the CA Supreme Court ruled nursing homes can’t misgender trans residents, upholding a law I passed.
CA isn’t down with Trump’s dehumanization campaign against trans folks.
This was just as true when Nancy Mace was posting hundreds of times a day about which bathroom her Democratic colleagues are allowed to use, but y’all aren’t ready for that conversation
I know that most people find this all funny but I believe her behavior warrants more serious conversation. Something is very wrong with Nancy Mace. She is no longer fit to serve.
5. The silver lining: Republicans keep losing elections when they fixate on attacking trans people while voters are demanding cheaper groceries, safer neighborhoods, and affordable housing. It’s a losing strategy — and they know it.
4. One idea, from Jules Gill-Peterson, is to center a right to change sex — a framework that doesn’t require creating a new protected class, but does recognize the lived reality of transition.
3. The bad news: this signals that the Court won’t recognize trans people as a protected class any time soon. That leaves three paths forward: 1) wait for the Court to change 2) demand Court reform 3) develop a legal theory this Court will accept.
2. The good news: the ruling rests on presidential power. That means the next Democratic president can undo it on Day One — or, better yet, remove sex markers from federal IDs entirely to protect privacy and freedom of expression.
1. The Supreme Court just let Trump’s order banning trans people from updating the sex marker on their passports go into effect. If you were planning to change yours, that window is likely closed until at least 2029.
