A couple of weeks back, I was the youngest speaker at the International Quorum of Motion Picture Producers. I talked about @CannaSapiensX. “A weed NFT project.” At a conference for studio heads and producers behind some of the world’s biggest campaigns, films, and series, reflecting on their past year and what they’re building next. What could go wrong? To my surprise, no one rolled their eyes when I dropped the almighty NFT word, and the talk actually became one of the highlights. I spoke about what it means to build IP for a community over an audience, and how the internet has fundamentally changed what people want from stories. Because today, if a story is designed only to be watched, read, or listened to aka just consumed.. it becomes interchangeable. Another brick in an endless wall. Not because the story is bad. But because the context has changed. We are surrounded by infinite content. But are starved for meaningful connection. (cliché af, I know) So when a story invites you in, leads you to others, gives you an audience of your own, to tell your own version of it, and that leads you to a community… well... that’s when it stops being content and becomes culture. To people in web3, this is obvious. To the wider world, not yet. This is where we are pioneers. The story is not the product. The relationship to the story is. And the people who truly understand this now are not just building communities. They are building worlds that continue even when they step away. Art doesn’t have to lose integrity through participation. It can gain dimension, if done right. So if you're building a “next-gen IP" The real question is not: How do you get people to consume your story? It is: How do you tell a story people actually want to live within? This has been my biggest lesson in web3.
