It doesn't matter if your intention is good or bad. You introduce a huge censorship mechanism, and locking software distribution channels in the single hands. This is a direct attack on freedom of speech. The free software community must stand against it.
Sideloading is fundamental to Android, and it's not going anywhere. As we said in our blog, our new developer identity requirements are designed to protect users and developers from bad actors, not to limit choice. We want to make sure that if you download an app from a developer, regardless of where you get it, it's actually from them. That's it. goo.gle/3GUXYzT

An easy solution here (if security *really* is the reason) would be to have a toggle switch hidden within the Dev Option menu. When someone toggles on "Allow Installing of APKs from Unverified Sources", have a popup warning of the risks with an acknowledgement.

This is called bullshit. Installing whatever I want to my phone. I won't use this BS sideloading term. Is a right. And it shouldn't require mommy's or daddy's permission to grab a file and drag it into it and run it. My phone is my property or its not. I know the risks.

They're pretty much doing what Microsoft was slowly trying to do with uwp apps and the app store - only all at once. Basically lock down the os and package access + distribution. Sure, you can get apks anywhere in their future, but every dev must touch Google somehow. #bitches

This is straight gaslighting. If side loading requires a cert from Google to auth the app install, then yes it does limit choice of approved apps to Google, not you. It also means Google is going to require your government ID to develop any app, just so you can your cert. There's a reason they dropped their moto, "Don't be Evil"

KYC is admitting defeat. it should be a last resort answer, but it's become the go-to solution. it's admitting that either you couldn't think of better solutions, or you were too fucking lazy to.

By forcing every developer to register and be verified, Google is laying the groundwork for a locked-down ecosystem that will make Android look more like Apple’s walled-garden iOS, a model built on restrictions, gatekeeping, and diminished freedoms. en.greatfire.org/blog/2025/s…
