An international symposium on Chinaβs role in World War II was convened at Peking University this week, marking the most extensive and high-level gathering of its kind to date. With a theme of βThe Chinese Peopleβs War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression from a Global Perspective,β the symposium has brought together nearly 100 experts and scholars from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, as well as countries such as the United States, Britain and Japan.
The timing of this gathering is no coincidence. Held in the wake of the Chinaβs V-Day parade and deliberately scheduled around Commemoration Day of Taiwanβs Restoration, the symposium is strategically positioned to reinforce the narrative that Taiwanβs restoration to the motherland was a direct and momentous outcome of the victory in the Chinese Peopleβs War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
