Imagine trial and erroring different prompts thousands of times—like pulling the arm of a slot machine hoping to get a decent shot at least once—over and over again… when you could have just paid animators to make exactly what what you want instead.
For the AI Coke ad, 100 people involved, price comparable to older AI free ads, 70000 AI video's generated. It doesn't sound like it was cheaper or more efficient & there's the added element of brand damage from people who think it looks terrible and soulless.

Profit motive pretty much guarantees most future content will be AI-generated. One Coke ad doesn't change a thing.

But the calculus is different. It’s an emerging technology. Learning to leverage it early will pay dividends in a decade or two. CGI used to be insanely harder and lower quality than hand animated. But the ones who got good at it early won in the long run.

"BuT yOu CaN't PuT tHe GeNiE bAcK iN tHe BoTtLe!" Yes you can, by just doing exactly this. I won't be surprised if they do this one or two more times, then decide to just cut their losses and go back to animating them normally. If GenAI lasts that long, even.

It upsets me because the story of how modern day Santa Claus looks has so much to do with Coca Cola and beautiful hand-drawn art by Haddon Sundblom. I feel like it's a slap in the face of his legacy

Companies are so invested into the idea of AI that they will ignore red flags that are slapping them in the face. After all to them 'AI is the future' so they probably consider this as them 'refining the process'.

there's a Phillip K dick story that has these machines that write speeches for people and I feel like the main character gets frustrated with the machine. also has people living in fear of a war that's going on and then you realize it was all made up

"AI will increase efficiency in filmmaking" and it's a 1350:1 shooting ratio :D

Not getting what I want is why I dropped AI kinda fast after playing around with it back in 2022. Learning to draw is hard, but I control the lines I put down

Its like rolling a d20 dice 70k times and NEVER get 20, because dice is rigged to never fall on 20. And you know it. And you say to your client " i can roll 20". An artist would have moved the dice on 20 without rolling. Or 14 if artist think 14 is more interesting.

I share your sentiment-the slot machine analogy says it all. Creative vision often gets lost in endless AI experiments, where skilled animators could have delivered the right result from the start.

Well put - AI's a slot machine.

Imagine if talented artists got more opportunities to work full time on talented projects instead of being carelessly contracted through a marketing agency that only needs them for a quick uncredited commercial

Maybe it wouldn't have been "a ton of work" for artists and graphic designers who are experienced at producing images and videos

Keep in mind how fucking strict these companies are about their ip. If you work in the industry you could have your work thrown out because you accidentally turned in a logo that was 1 shade too bright.

You sound like someone who doesn’t understand the creative process.
