so Universal butchered Darkman originally, cutting it from 2 hours to 85 minutes. with each test screening of the butchered version, the score just got lower and lower. here's producer Rob Tapert talking about how they heroically saved Darkman by tricking the studio

The film has this wonderful frenetic energy AND real heart. Every trick shot has a purpose, there's not a single wasted moment, you know where everything and everyone is in every action scene.
