Chrono Trigger (1995, Squaresoft) - SNES PC Emulator vs. SNES S-Video via Sony PVM-20L2MD I know we've been looking at a lot of portraits and S-Video this week, but I just grant me one more!

I literally just saved this exact monitor from recycling at my work yesterday and it's my favorite thing I own:

I think there's a certain aesthetic to both images.

Need scanline filter plastic or simulated one that understand person's head position. Similar to LookingGlass.

The portraits in chrono trigger are such a stellar example of sub-pixel effects via analog post processing.

Most of these comparisons don't seem very different to me, but this one is pretty stark!

I always love seeing the pixelated shading turning into something a lot more realistic.

The first one makes it looks like she has lipstick and I don’t like it

Haha. I grew up playing it on emulator. So, the 'smoothed' out one always looks weird to me, but it's interesting cause it's how it was obviously meant to be viewed.

I'm a pure pixel man but that CRT presentation is superb, the smoothness that adds on the skin shading, the whole analogic feel that gives instead of a low res macro pixel image impression... Dammit, it could even pass on being confused as an anime frame displayed on a CRT.

Always remember what they took from you when we moved from CRT to LCD.

Isn't there a filter for emulators that replicate crts?

It's like built-in anti-aliasing. That's fascinating.

Omg, I always found so curious that Lucca's portrait sprite didn't have the same hair colour as the full-model sprite. I just realized that in the CRT screenshot the colours vary so it IS actually her usual purple hair.

I get noise I guess when I run svideo to my Sony CRT not sure if the cable is poor or if it's just an svideo thing

I wish there was a filter that did the blending without the spacing between the lines, since I could only see those if I put a magnifying glass to my TV. The visual effects from blending are great though.
Fave character!
