Many of you mentioned planting trees and you’re absolutely right. Expanding green, shaded and waterwise public spaces forms a key part of the City’s Beat the Heat programme, which is part of our broader Heat Action Plan.

This ensures the City is addressing growing climate risks without creating a new post or additional salary cost.
Importantly, Albert Ferreira is not a new appointment. He is an existing senior staff member whose role has been expanded to include coordinating the City’s work on extreme heat awareness and adaptation.
Cape Town continues to experience hotter and longer summers, with temperatures reaching over 44°C last year. Extreme heat is becoming a serious public health and urban planning challenge, especially for vulnerable residents and outdoor workers.
We understand that the idea of a Chief Heat Officer might sound unusual at first but this is a global initiative and is already being implemented in cities such as Athens, Miami, Freetown and Melbourne.
