As long as Gabe Newell is alive, I'll continue to support Valve + Steam. Never had an issue with Steam and I've been using it for 20 years.

Lot of respect for you and your team but this is just incorrect man. Steam's toolchain for devs is ancient and arcane compared to virtually every other competitor and they have no incentive to modernize because of their market share. 1/2

the cut they take from games is a bit high methinks but other than that theyre literally the protector angels of gaming

It will be, once Gabe is retired. They started with enforcing online DRM for single player HL2, got some credit with supporting indies, while reeling in the AAA who always got blasted trying this (remember Bioshock and Spore?). Steam was the the death sentence to ownership and >

I spent about 35 minutes too long on this. If I Knew how to green screen an actor out of a video I probably would have spent 20 more.

Steam isn't even a monopoly. They just offer a better service to consumers than their competitors. They're not the ones buying off games to have exclusivity.

theres been plenty of competitors such as origin, ubisoft and of course epic games. but even with their huge libraries they just cant compete with the service steam provides. I understand that steam might not be the most friendly with its fees but its the best for consumers

True. As a player, while Steam is the better store, I will keep prioritizing it. All other alternatives (with the sole exception of GOG) are still far worse to be seriously considered as viable options.

Oh I'm sure there's a few publishers out there that would love to get steam out of the way. Her and get rid of game reviews. They keep the rest of us in the dark for their shady game developments.

The shares people hate that a private company is holding a monopoly with a mostly user first product, as it became a barrier to BS the execs were able to pull off in the other entertainment mediums to make them loads of money to be pulled in gaming.

The "industry executives" part of this made me laugh.

I really hope Gabe is cultivating a new Gabe or someone else who also cares about the industry. Shits gonna be so bleak when he’s gone.

All 72% developers that complain about Steam are the ones who refuse to put their games on GoG because “but I can’t have my game DRM free cause piracy 😭 and lost sales”

Steam is not a monopoly. It competes with Playstation, Nintendo, and Xbox. We recently found out Amazon (an actual monopoly) spent 15 years trying to beat it.

Industry executives don't like end users being treated with respect. Many such cases.

Shit holders when your competition isn’t trying to take as much profits out of every corner they can while also offering a product people actually enjoy using instead of the slop program they pushed out to min max more profits with no thoughts past that

This monopoly thing is bullshit. That's not how a monopoly works; Steam is dominant, but there are alternatives.
