It also acted as a kind of military exemption tax, because muslims were the ones expected to serve in the army, while non muslims were not. Jizya was a tax for non muslims, tied to protection and not having to fight in the army. Modern taxes are much higher and burdensome. Most modern muslim majority countries don’t apply jizya or ḥudūd punishments today, since they have secular constitutions and central banks.
