I find this hard to actually believe, but maybe these people are saying this, so they have a better chance of getting a job in US. Everyone’s moving. You should move. Other PhD topics I’ve seen on here recently: PhD faculty, Post-Docs and PhD students saying don’t get PhDs. Waste of time; not worth it. But OTOH, Researchers saying that they can’t published unless they are in US and a few other countries

Interesting. Considering <<< action. Has there been movement above the usual rate this year? And move to where? It’s not like eg Europe is rife with unfiltered faculty positions… what if any are the thoughts on that? Not even getting into the salary delta.

@grok how big is the „researcher“ paygap difference between the US and EU (on average)?

That poll is garbage because they posted it to bluesky and X saying “are you a researcher considering leaving the country? Come take this poll!” It’s meaningless. The fact that nature would drop all pretense of rigor to advance an agenda is why the Trump admin is justified.

You think Europe is going to continue to be able to afford it's generous socialism programs and bloated governments when they're forced to spend 5% of GDP on defense?

This is a case-study in biased polling. The angry respondents are the ones more likely to respond. @Nature @Magda_Skipper

Talent seeks environments offering growth and appreciation. The U.S. research climate must evolve to retain its best minds.

We need new blood in medicine bad. I can’t even go to a doctor over age 40. Can’t tell me zilch about fasting, supplements, nutrition, basic things like methylated B12 after childbirth…. this is all younger gen things.

Not that we can afford to lose them, but only a tiny fraction of those researchers (mainly leaders in their fields) will find productive work abroad. Who has the money to hire them?

Just like Hollywood virtue signalers, this is likely all talk and no action. If such scientists do leave, fine! Better to thin out the herd of political activists pretending to be scientists.

We've see this before. We've seen it often enough & at such a magnitude that we have an expression for it – Brain Drain! Sadly, I never thought the vector would be OUT of my country, America.

When those countries decide to Open Access their literature the US will copy it and create companies off the backs of other taxpayers dollars. Reciprocity.

Hmm This is a pipe dream to leave USA for research. (There is opportunity for exchange type research positions at UNIs) Most $€£¥ are in USA or greatly influenced by USA decision makers such as pharmaceutical R&D Compensation outside NY is 30 to 50% lower (and the cost of living as high as USA) w taxes 15-30% higher The federal $$$ are in movement and adroit leaders here are moving to secure such under new or modified requirements/focus A large amount of R&D is private money now (devices pharmaceuticals clinical software…) And US needed a (federal) reordering of what research was needed/valued and funded. More rigor in deciding where to spent scare dollars. My advice to R&D leaders is engage (w updated game plan) and act to pivot your organization as needed. Best use of time.

The “scientists” leaving the country aren’t the free thinking, highly intelligent innovators we want. They are the conformist cogs who get in the way of genuine insight and bog down resources that could be better spent. We are better off with them hindering our competitors.

Tenured faculty will overwhelmingly just sit tight. Just as they always do. Untenured scientists will just try to survive and seek alternative careers. Chinese expats are a different category and some will willingly return to the PRC.

Has the makings of great reality TV, like watching the surprise experienced by Americans who went to the Soviet Union during the Great Depression with the hope of participating in a "worker's miracle" and subsequently disappeared.

Since 75% of U.S. researchers are considering leaving, perhaps DEI offices could assist them in finding destinations with the most contrasting skin tones and cultures. Surely that would advance both science and justice.

There is no such money in Europe so China I guess is the destination then. I am not sure that this is what all those people are planning though. Filling in a survey is easy but understanding the implications is usually tougher. Most people will not move.
