Latvian president vetoes law to withdraw from Istanbul Convention on domestic violence Edgars Rinkēvičs used a constitutional article that allows the president to reject a law approved by parliament. Critics of the Istanbul Convention claim the document promotes so-called “gender ideology.” They argue domestic violence can be addressed using national legislation instead. The parliament’s decision to quit the convention earlier sparked protests.
