Last week, Israeli Military Advocate General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned after admitting she had provided the media with footage showing soldiers committing severe acts of abuse against a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp.
The documented violence at Sde Teiman, and other incidents exposed by investigative journalists and human rights groups, reflect a broader reality: Israeli prison facilities have been turned into torture camps for Palestinians since 7 October 2023.
Our report “Welcome to Hell” reviewed testimonies from 55 Palestinians men and women who were held in Israeli prisons and detention facilities during this period and were later released. The vast majority of them were never charged. Their testimonies reveal an institutional policy of abuse: deliberate humiliation, severe violence, starvation, sleep deprivation, and denial of medical care and religious practice.
In the past two years, at least 80 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody.
The testimonies expose the outcome of a process in which more than a dozen Israeli prison facilities, both civilian and military, have been transformed into a network of torture camps operating under a systematic policy whose primary purpose is to inflict suffering and humiliation on those detained.
