The approach they ended up taking was next to the OG storyline they've prepared this separate timeline layer—this parallel layer—where when the story seems like is about to change, you have these Whispers coming in to sort of try to correct the flow and return things to normal.

"Shoving Cloud into a zack shaped box" No Cloud put himself in a Zack shaped Box because of trauma. Aerith pulled him OUT of that box. She saw his real self & told him HE was worthy enough as himself. The "real cloud" she's trying so hard to find that Tifa never noticed.

Aerith is charming and spunky and clearly written to be endearing to the player and the other characters. She has a big heart and both loves and his beloved by her friends, but sometimes her actions don’t match her words and I think it’s fair to criticize that.

And she is damn well aware of Tifa's feelings. At her core Aerith is a childish and selfish character who never bothers to step back and think about how her actions affect people. I get she's grieving and in denial but that's not an excuse. Not when those actions hurt people.

My--actual--hot take is Aerith is a horrible "friend" to both Tifa and Cloud. She constantly tried to shove Cloud in a Zack shaped box, not even caring how it made him feel or caring about his autonomy. And she stabbed Tifa in the back knowingly going after the man she loves
