I think one of the coolest things about London is the ‘City of London’, which in fact has nothing to do with London city and is a private corporation that runs the ‘square mile’, which is the heart of Londons financial district and has its own laws and police force
- it’s composed of ‘companies’, each company representing a trade. There are 100+
- you can ‘pay a fine’ to buy your ‘freedom’ from the city
- once you become a freeman you have several privileges including being able to herd sheep across London Bridge without paying a toll (people do it today too!). Also if you’re ever drunk and passed out in the city it is their responsibility to get you home
- each company has a number, higher the number more prestigious the company. Fun fact: the phrase ‘of sixes and sevens’ derived from two companies (skinners and merchant Taylors) conflicting over who is six and seven
- The City of London corporation also runs Hampstead Heath (londons largest park?) if not the best amongst other charities
- many other fun things and activities
They try to stay relevant (new companies, activities) but in my personal experience have struggled to do so. Nevertheless, I think it’s one of the coolest things about London.
I have taken office as the 697th Lord Mayor of the City of London - the first to use the title Lady Mayor.
My focus this year:
- Make Mansion House the embassy for financial services
- Unsquare the Square Mile to attract the best talent
- Champion access to opportunities for all
