This happened because @EU_Commission blindly followed climate activists. I worked on the grid for a summer, let me explain: It's viral that the grid be kept at 50/60hz. Power demand is constantly changing. The supply must throttle up/down instantly to meet demand. When it does not there is an imbalance, think like when you turn on the shower and washing machine at the same time and the lights flicker - but at the scale of a country. Traditionally we had gas/coal plants which could easily throttle up or down to meet demand. But in recent years the EU has hastily shut down these plants for renewable sources which cannot throttle. Spain/Portugal experienced an unpredictable surge in demand which their renewable plants could not keep up with, this caused the frequency to drop and the grid to collapse. Think of it like the circuit breaker in your house going off. Except we cant just flick it on. There is irreparable amounts of damage here. Which would have never happened had they just considered the consequences of shutting down those plants
