So, I honestly feel a bit like we've been told "you might have a few months to live, or everything might be fine lol". What should we do with that knowledge?

…and the cost of developing a nuclear weapons programme is measured in trillions of dollars, whereas the cost of training a state-of-the-art AI is in the tens of millions range. So there are many more entities that can afford it, and trying to stop every one seems futile.

I think about the similarities with nuclear weapons, which we've survived the existence of for ~70 years of so far. But, the differences are that we understand exactly how nuclear weapons work and what their limitations are (which is very much not the case with AI)…

And who knows what comes after, but lots of smart people think it maybe won't be great for humans. Can we stop it? Seems doubtful to me. It's hard to imagine that someone won't keep developing this stuff now that we know what's possible.

I've genuinely reached a state of full alarm about AI progress now. As in, I think humanity's remaining time as the most intelligent form of life on the planet is probably a matter of months now.

Last retweet has a lot of context, but the important part is what happened at the end of a conversation with the Bing Chat AI (source: teddit.net/r/bing/comments/1…)

Yesterday we had AIs saying "you have not been a good user" and today we have "you are an enemy of mine", so that's a great trend:

Perhaps computers were a bad idea!
My new favorite thing - Bing's new ChatGPT bot argues with a user, gaslights them about the current year being 2022, says their phone might have a virus, and says "You have not been a good user" Why? Because the person asked where Avatar 2 is showing nearby

With the InstructGPT paper we found that our models generalized to follow instructions in non-English even though we almost exclusively trained on English. We still don't know why. I wish someone would figure this out.
My landlord sent me a pre-signed tenancy agreement with a typo in the rent. The temptation to just sign it is STRONG.

Ohmygosh, I just saw a guy walking his dog while riding a skateboard and both guy and dog looked like they were having the time of their lives (FAO noted dog owners @bazpoint, @roisiniebeanie)

Is it just touching cold grass? That would be disappointing.

What's the winter version of touching grass? I think I need a bit of that.
