I think it's part of human nature to try to categorise in terms of hierarchy, as well as desire to aspire to being high in that system. Issue is some people take that desire and strive to improve, while others need to look down on others to strengthen their perceived position.
High position in a hierarchy might be the closest thing to heaven, in our minds. A metaphorical Tower of Bable.

It's a Social Problem, Rich folks make the rules and they expect us to follow them, usually the ones who "dominated" in whatever is abundant is usually the one who can claim or set such rules. However they use Racism as an excuse for this.

It is just human nature to separate people into categories. Race is just an obvious way to do so, but even in racially homogenous societies, people find some reason to discriminate. If it's not skin color, it'll be foot width or nose length.
