So, this is the image that MAGA guy said made him upset. Asking my compassionately amazing allies — does this historical truth bother you?

Jul 7, 2023 · 4:21 PM UTC

Both my parents were boarding school victims/survivors. But suffered lifelong post-traumatic boarding school trauma. My mother always slept with the light on. I was always too afraid to ask what occurred at her boarding school, at night. So I left it alone.

My beloved father suffered unspeakable abuses that no child should ever have to endure. His horrific stories were reminiscent of how POW victims were mistreated after they were captured. Consequently, he drank to escape from them — drinking himself to a premature grave.

I’m sorry if my family’s stories offend some people. As it’s not my intention. I’ve found that journaling about them is incredibly cathartic. Because in many ways I feel that I suffer a bit too — from my parent’s residual post-traumatic boarding school trauma.

Not at all. Truth is truth. That meme saddens me. It doesn't offend me in the least. Please keep sharing.

Reasonable humans will NEVER support any MAGA position. If it’s an opinion that they voice, then it’s knuckle-dragging, racist drivel— 100% of the time.

It breaks my heart for what they did to the Lakota people. They being outside shows their unconditional love for their children. The Creator is not pleased with what they did to your people!

No. It was horrible. We’re not doing that anymore and as long as we keep remembering we won’t again. Kinda like the Holocaust

Your truths must be made known. Don't shy away from the telling no matter what.

It upsets me that this happened. Not that you are discussing it.
It breaks my heart. But it doesn’t “bother me,” in that sense. White people need to know this stuff - full stop.

Every American should learn about the Tulsa Massacre and read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee." There's nothing wrong with Woke Truth.

Truth is often painful as some people cannot deal with it because it conflicts with a false narrative they operate on. The indignities inflicted on native Americans in the name of religion is unspeakable. Religion is the cause of nearly all suffering.

Yes, @LakotaMan1 the truth does “bother” me, as it should!! Thank you for sharing your pain, and the horrors of the traumas inflicted by our ancestors on our indigenous brothers and sisters. We allies must be willing to look at the truth, no matter how painful it is for us to acknowledge that truth. We must find a way to make reparations, and to ensure it will never happen again.

Yeah. It makes me mad that we took the children! I appreciate learning more about the wrongs we did so we can make sure we don’t allow them to happen again. I want to learn from history not whitewash it.

I am not bothered by the facts and revealed truth. To pretend the government didn't separate Lakota families from their children, or to whitewash what happened, serves no purpose except to lay a foundation for the same cruel acts to happen again to an oppressed people. A case in point is the separation of migrant families and their children at the southern border of the United States under the Trump Administration’s zero-tolerance policy. Likewise, many people desire to cover up the senseless and brutal murder of African Americans during slavery to avoid addressing the acts of their forefathers. Unfortunately, the denying descendants of slaveholders continue to brutalize and senselessly murder African Americans and other people of color. #NeverForget

Yeah, it bothers me. It bothers me that we ever DID that. It was evil. It doesn’t bother me to be told we did that.

Yes, it does upset me that parents had to go to such extremes to be close to their children. My heart hurts for them.

Hell yes it bothers me. Bothers me that the image of Native families showing love for their children upsets ANYONE. Why is the “protect the children” GQP hiding this fact of our history from us all?

I was never told that they had to do that to be near their children. That’s very sad.

Yes I am bothered by this. I am bothered by all of the history of abuse towards the Indigenous People of this land. And I should be. But… am I bothered by you and your ongoing efforts to educate and illuminate… absolutely not!

My first year of teaching was on a rez in NM and what an eye-opening experience that was. There are historical truths on that rez and surrounding environs that should horrify everyone. If those truths make certain white people nervous and twitchy, they should seek help.

What upsets me is that the children were taken from their parents to be tortured and abused 💔 I cannot begin to imagine how parents and children must have felt.

Only the fact that native children were stolen from their families & then their families were punished for wanting to protect & be close to their children.

Nope. We collectively owe first thanks and sincere apologies to all the Indigenous of these beautiful lands! And then too to ALL the Immigrants long ago and today who fought suffered slogged to make us better and the greatest tribe known to mankind… 🇺🇸

It makes me upset, too…that children were stolen from their parents, forced to stop being themselves, observing their traditions, forbidden to speak their true language & be with their families. Damn right it’s upsetting! Because it was, and still is, wrong and hateful!
