NEW — Senate GOP Conference to meet at 12:30pm tomorrow. Senate to convene at noon for a rare Sunday session as they try to find a way out of the shutdown.
Schumer on the floor now talking about SNAP and flight chaos.
"So why have Republicans drug this shutdown on for so, so long? Because they don't want to lower health care costs," Schumer says.
We all just caught up with @LeaderJohnThune in the Capitol.
THUNE said he will keep the Senate in session until the government reopens.
The chamber was supposed to be out of session next week for Veteran's Day.
If you’re looking for signals to see when this standoff might end, this is a sign it’s going to keep going a good while.
Trump is digging in further against the enhanced Obamacare premium tax credits.
Totally agree, @POTUS! I’m writing the bill right now.
We must stop taxpayer money from going to insurance companies and instead give it directly to Americans in HSA-style accounts and let them buy the health care they want. This will increase competition & drive down costs.
To that end… The Dems who have been in talks with R’s see new momentum within the Dem caucus tonight for a deal now that R’s rejected Schumer’s new offer today
More of them are now open to a deal and approaching Dems in the bipartisan group searching for alternative path fwd
THUNE says it “remains to be seen” if something comes together for the Senate to vote on tomorrow.
Says “fingers crossed” on whether there’s any update on minibus negotiations.
Sens. Shaheen, Hassan & King, among other Dem Caucus members, just met for two hours, I’m told, as they look to accelerate bipartisan talks.
These Dems view Schumer’s offer today, and Republicans’ quick rejection of it, as a positive — a way to jumpstart their effort again.
.@RepJeffries on Senate Democrats proposal for 1-year Obamacare extension (he’s a yes)
“The initiative put forth by Leader Schumer is a very reasonable, good faith proposal that reopens the government and addresses an important part of the Republican healthcare crisis. House Democrats will convene as a Caucus shortly, where we will have an opportunity to further discuss how to end the Republican shutdown. Mike Johnson and House Republicans need to get back to work and return from their outrageous six-week long taxpayer-funded vacation. Enough.”
Senate Dems' proposal of a CR w/ 1-year extension of enhanced Obamacare subsidies is going over badly w/ House R's already:
- @freedomcaucus calls it an "absurd offer"
- RSC Chair @RepPfluger calls it a "nonstarter" for the group, which includes 189 R's
Any Obamacare deal would face big obstacles w/ House GOP
We should not be made to continue flooding health insurance companies with taxpayer dollars under Obamacare as the price to open up the government.
I find Senator Schumer’s demands ridiculous and equivalent to political hostage taking to continue bad policy.
Under Obamacare, health insurance companies’ average weighted stock prices have exploded – a more than 1000% increase – because they’re the biggest winners of Obamacare. In 2010, President Obama promised that healthcare premiums would go down by $2500 per family. To the contrary, from 2013-2019 premiums under Obamacare increased over 100% with no end in sight.
Therefore, my no vote will be an unequivocal rejection of Senator Schumer’s very bad idea.

🚨 This is an absurd offer from Chuck Schumer.
Senate Democrats are now saying they’ll ONLY agree to reopen the government if we extend the temporary COVID Obamacare subsidies for health insurance companies.
They’re holding the entire country hostage to protect their failing health care scheme and enrich insurance companies, while funding abortion, child sex changes, and exacerbating fraud — all while families go without paychecks.
Schumer says this is a reasonable offer
Republicans are almost certain to reject it. One R just noted that all this does is force Congress to address it around the midterms next year
Dream scenario for Dems to be able to talk about health care right before the elections
More on the Dem offer:
—Clean CR paired with 3-bill minibus
—Clean one-year Obamacare extension
—Establish bipartisan committee for long-term Obamacare negotiations
