A imagem do monstro verde, com parafusos e cabeça chata foi uma invenção do filme da Universal de 1931, mas no livro a criatura tem pele amarelada, longos cabelos negros lustrosos, olhos acinzentados, dentes perolados e medindo 2,4 metros. Del Toro foi extremamente fiel ao livro.
