So I met a young Irish lad two days ago. He’s an engineer, went to college, did everything right, got himself educated, got a good job.
He and his girlfriend, a school teacher, are living in a house with seven other people. The two of them share a double room. They each pay €400 a month, €800 in total, and they consider themselves lucky.
He told me they can’t afford to buy, and they can’t get a mortgage that’s anywhere near the price of a house in Ireland today.
I didn’t know what to say to him, so I just asked, “What are you, mid-twenties?” He looked at me and said, “I’m 31. I should have my own house by now.”
And he’s right. Two educated, hard-working professionals should be able to build a future in their own country. Instead, they’re locked out of it. And that’s a disgrace. An unacceptable disgrace. It’s the reality of what this government is doing to an entire generation.
