Trivia: USS Nautilus (SS-168), a Narwhal-class cruiser submarine, was commissioned July 1, 1930, and named for the nautilus. Laid down as V-6 (SC-2) on August 2, 1927, at Mare Island, she was launched March 15, 1930. The largest U.S. sub pre-nuclear, she carried 2 × 6-inch guns and 24 torpedoes. At Midway (June 4, 1942), she attacked Kirishima, missed Sōryū/Kaga with duds, and led VB-6 to the Japanese fleet via Arashi’s wake. She sank Yamakaze (June 25) and 3 sampans. On August 17, she landed Carlson’s Raiders on Makin, shelled Ukiangong, and evacuated ~90 survivors. She reconnoitered Tarawa, Abemama, and landed 78 Marines on Abemama (November 21), securing it by November 26. She sank America Maru (March 21, 1944) and ran 9 special ops in the Philippines (1944), delivering supplies, evacuating refugees, and grounding on Iuisan Shoal (September 25). On October 31, she shelled Darter’s wreck 55 times to prevent salvage. Decommissioned June 30, 1945, stricken July 25, and scrapped November 16. Earned Presidential Unit Citation and 14 battle stars.
