Estranged - the Indian history we don’t learn in our schools - covers Hindu genocide in partition-era Bengal to Goa Inquisition and everything in between - the thriller’s a facade, but hope you like the facade too.

I wrote this and posted this a couple of weeks ago because of the anti-Mormon sentiment I was seeing online. It seemed to be headed to a bad place. My heart is broken and my nerves shattered by the fact it did go to that place. Hard to bounce back.
In 1975 while on a business trip my late father had a nervous breakdown in the Salt Lake City airport and became catatonic in a chair for hours. As the airport shut down for the night around him, an elderly LDS (Mormon) couple sat down next to him and started gently speaking to him and holding his hands. When he was able to get up, they took him into their home and put him to bed. In the morning he was a little better. Later, they sent him off on a plane to come home to us. They then visited our family in Phoenix just to check on him. They made sure other, local Mormons did too. They saved his life, he told me. He was 38 years old at the time. He had a wonderful few decades after that. And boy did we need him back that year. Many such stories.

From a couple of weeks ago. It scared me to see my Mormon friends being spoken of so terribly. So I reposted my most searching personal testimony on the matter from 2012. I'm doing it again for tragic reasons.
For my Mormon friends, who have always been there for me -- an understatement -- here is an essay from years ago about my adventures in and out of the faith. I'm very proud of this memoir. Walter Kirn: Confessions of an Ex-Mormon | The New Republic newrepublic.com/article/1049…

Synopsis of The Altar Boy: A Dark Tale of Comedy, Sorrow and the Catholic Church in the 1960s by Phil Stephens: Set against the socially and politically turbulent 1960s, The Altar Boy is a fictionalized memoir that follows Carl Sanders, a sensitive and humorous boy growing up in a Catholic family in Connecticut. The narrative alternates between the late 1980s, where Carl and his brother Mike reconnect over drinks to piece together their chaotic family history, and flashbacks to Carl’s childhood. The story centers on the unraveling of Carl’s family due to his parents’ faltering marriage and the intrusive presence of Father Jacobson, a charismatic but narcissistic priest who disrupts their lives. As an altar boy, Carl navigates the rituals and expectations of the Catholic Church while grappling with the hypocrisy, cover-ups, and betrayal he witnesses, particularly involving his mother, Madeline, and the priest. The return of an absent family member after 20 years threatens to reignite old conflicts, forcing Carl to confront painful memories. Blending humor, nostalgia, and tragedy, the novel captures the era’s rock ‘n’ roll, Catholic school life, boyhood pranks, and the Church’s unchecked power. Described as poignant and gripping, it explores themes of innocence lost, family dysfunction, and institutional corruption. The book, rated T for Teens with parental guidance advised, won the 2016 International Publisher Awards Gold Medal for Best Contemporary Novel and was a Rave Reviews Book Club pick in February 2019. @psteph55 amzn.to/4l7FjQ4 barnesandnoble.com/w/the-alt… independentauthornetwork.com… About the Author, Phil Stephens: Phil Stephens is an Indiana native and author of The Altar Boy, a critically acclaimed historical fiction novel based on true events.
