In memory of 19 year old Joe Mellor who walked out of our former home sometime in June/July 1917, walked the half mile up the dirt track to the place he was picked up by the troop carrier, did his basic training and left for France. Within days of reaching the front he was dead. He was buried in Belgium. His father received two pounds, his prayer book, a tobacco tin and a couple of photos. I obviously never met or knew Joe but I will never forget his senseless sacrifice.
