Some of y’all never had to edit a config.sys file to get a game to run and it shows 😆😜

Some of y'all didn't have a .bat file that swapped out different config.sys and autoexec.bat files, depending on the game you want to run!

Some have taken a peek at it and then had a poke at it!

Dam forgot about this stuff lol
And reordering driver load to save a few KB under the 640K barrier. I can't believe we did that without chatgpt 🤓

Getting your sound and music to play from some of these games was also a chore at times

Bro...I had to make fucking boot menus on MS-DOS 6 for several games because one wanted XMS memory, another wanted EMS memory and one wanker but great game (Ultima7) used undocumented Unreal mode that they called "Voodoo mode" and of course did not like XMS or EMS. And let's not just talk about boot disks before that ... 😑 Back then it was all fun & new but now that I look back: We were all crazy machosists 😁

Better: I ran memmaker to get SimCity 2000 to run in DOS, but it broke Windows. Wasn't allowed to touch my step-father's computer ever again. Sold all my sports memorabilia and built my own computer that was way better than his. Essentially kick started my tech career @ 11yo

or HIMEM.SYS for extended memory! It was introduced in Windows 2.1 (1988).

that is some ancient knowledge there. Or making an Autoexec.bat file so you dont have to add in values or modifications everytime you want to play.

Lol. We had a windows boot discs specifically tailored to free up enough memory to play certain games. I remember the times fondly, but not so fondly at the time. :-D

Yeah, I started without DOS..

I can. My first program was in assembly language entered as hex into a wire wrap computer when I was 11.

Least you have a soundblaster 😂. The big question was Aureal Vortex 2 or SB. Clearly the Aureal was better for games 👍👍

I managed to get 622Kb out of my base 640Kb free for games by dumping everything else into high memory!

Do you really need that mouse driver? Is it crucial? I miss my SoundBlaster cards, I'd be happy if they made MB modules just so I can see the name in my device manager

I used to have autoexec.bat, EMM386, and basic DOS on my interviews... but then I realized I'm just testing "how old are you?". However, I still hold that CMD is good for all IT and programming jobs to this day. Why bother w PS execution issues if you can do it in batch?

Argh! The old Soundblaster 16 drivers... quick kids, got your 6 20D dice! rollem an if you get 4 natual 20's the drivers MIGHT work... and your game MIGHT run... F15 strike fighter III was a PITA to do that on.
