NEW | Instagram has removed the verified account of Gaza slain journalist Saleh al-Jafarawi, who had 4.5 million followers. Archived snapshots of his page on the Wayback Machine, the largest public internet archive, also appear to have been wiped or disabled, raising concerns about digital erasure of Palestinian documentation. Al-Jafarawi, known for his frontline reporting on the Gaza genocide, had previously faced repeated censorship. He was killed yesterday by an armed group collaborating with Israel. Observers warn that these developments may signal “a new phase in efforts to erase evidence of Israeli war crimes from the internet.”

Update | The Wayback Machine confirmed to QNN that it did not remove or erase any archived pages related to journalist Saleh al-Jafarawi’s Instagram. “The archived records of it redirects to a login URL as no content was captured for this account”

They killed his body, now they’re killing his memory. Erasing a journalist’s voice is how empires rewrite their crimes.

Killing a journalist is already a war crime, but erasing their digital record is rewriting history itself. Palestine’s story is being systematically deleted so the world forgets the crimes as they happen. This is evidence destruction, not just censorship.

This is one more reason we should fight for public ownership of the social media. This is theft, destruction of crime evidence, it shouldn't be allowed and points to the necessity of all of us having our own records of what we post on these media. Social media is literally theft.

Here’s some documentation for you. He was as much a journalist as I’m Muslim if I say “inshallah” one time. He played roles as a Hamas propagandist. A Riefenstahl in a keffiye.

Several months ago, I reached out to our contacts at Meta after Saleh Jafarawi’s Instagram account was taken down. Meta has worked with @MuslimGirl for years and my dear friend @SubhiAlBiddawy hoped we could help get them answers. This is the response we received. It is nearly identical to so many whose accounts have been censored for documenting a genocide. This is what it looks like when human rights are violated online. Social networks are doing the dirty work of governments for them and aiding and abetting war crimes. Even as companies, they must be held to account.

He wasn't a journalist, though. He was a Pallywood actor and Hamas propagandist.
