Soffer tried everything to pressure me, especially by contacting and and even harassing with phone calls my close friend and supporter, Jewish maga-philanthropist Miriam Adelson, to accept an apology and a commitment by the Fontainebleau to retrain their security to protect Jews. Miri would broker the apology. I accepted.
It was seemingly a ruse.
Soffer was allegedly just playing for time, misleading me and even Miriam Adelson, while his lawyer, Sean Burstyn, a Jeffrey Epstein-case-related-attorney, prepared a lawsuit to sue me into silence. By involving Miri, Soffer allegedly bought time so he could frame the encounter not as a Rabbi threatened with destruction for being a Jew but as a shakedown attempt. I demanded that visible Jews at that lobby should be protected. Soffer filed his lawsuit and demanded millions of dollars.
Because brother, let’s call this what it is: This is about who has the power — to shape the narrative, to suppress the truth, to hide behind walls of lawyers and press releases while a Jew is terrorized inside. It’s the classic action of a bully billionaire for whom profits rather than morality is the bottom line. And it’s a classic story of the powerful persecuting the weak.
But Soffer made the biggest mistake of his life. While I may not be rich in unlimited resources to fight a billionaire, I am a member of a people that is indestructible. I am not a sheep Jew. I will never be silent when I or any other Jewish person is threatened with murder for simply existing. A property owner cannot disclaim responsibility simply because a guest with hateful intent amplified the voice of hate. Hotels have security. Hotels have duty. And when that duty fails under their roof, truth must prevail.
And so the Hollywood-style twist: The very owner who sues me for defamation now finds himself shadowboxing — ducking questions, hiding from deposition, terrified the truth will come out. - open.substack.com/pub/rabbis…
