To be noted that Sayanācharya did not derive the speed of light, he said "तथा च स्मर्यते" he is just recalling a well established fact. Somehow ancients knew the exact speed of light. While I'm studying Shastras, I find a lot of such things, but I usually keep them to myself because I know people have been brainwashed to blindly trust western translations. This speed of light is one of the few cases where alternate translation is not possible.

4/n 1 Nikesha = Time Taken to to open and close the Eyes. But it is more Exact mathematically as below 15 nimēṣas = 1 kāṣṭhā” → “30 kāṣṭhās = 1 kalā” → “30 kalās = 1 muhūrta (48 min) There are 30 Muhurata in 1 day = 30*48min*60sec= 86400 seconds (also 24 hrs*3600 seconds= 86400) So in one Day there are 30*30*30*15 nimēṣas = 4,05,000 So one Nimesa= 86400/405000 = 0.2133 Seconds Half Nimesha = 0.1066 Seconds So 2202 Yojnas = 2206 *14.6km/Yojana = 32207.6 So Rishi Sayana in his Bhasya on the Rig Veda Verse says that : As I remember (from Traditions), Surya (Sunlight) travels 2202 Yojana (32207.6km) in Half Nimesha (0.1066 Seconds) which gives us 3.019 Lakh kms/ second which is awesomely closely to 3Lac Kms/second as per Modern Science.

3/n Rishi Sayanacharya clearly says from the Ancient Traditions (works of many Astrologers/Astronomers) he remembers : "Sun Moves at at the rate of 2,202 yojanas in half a Nimeṣa" A) As per Surya Siddhantha (1.12-14) 1 nimeṣa ≈ 0.213sec (in modern terms) half nimeṣa ≈ 0.106 s B) As per ArthaShatra (2.20.18-19) 1 yojana ≈ 14.6 km (in modern terms) C) Therefore the deduction is that 2,202 yojanas in ½ nimeṣa ⇒ ~3.0 × 10⁵ km/s

2/n Rishi Sayanacharya Commentry on RigVeda is highly revered in Bharat. During the 14th Centrury on this Verse 1.50.4 on Surya, in Rigveda by Sayana Acharya comments तथा च स्मर्यते — योजनानां सहस्रे द्वे, द्वे शते द्वे च योजने, एकेन निमिषार्धेन क्रममाण नमोऽस्तु ते। And thus it is remembered (in tradition): (O Sun,) moving at the rate of 2,202 yojanas in half a nimeṣa, I bow to you.
