A Story of Halloween - The night I got to BE The Doctor. So, I contemplated not dressing up as the 12th Doctor this Halloween. It was hot, there was a fair amount of prep, blah blah blah. But I went ahead with it. For a couple hours I handed out candy, made funny remarks to the kids (only a few of which had any idea who I was), and watched Army of Darkness between Trick or Treaters. At some point, I'm at the back of the house doing something and Carrie rushes back. She tells me there was a boy at the door dressed in a fez and a bow tie (the 11th Doctor), his parents brought him to our house specifically because of our Doctor Who decorations. He was in tears because he'd broken his sonic screwdriver (Carrie also pointed out that he was special needs). So, out the door I ran, sonic screw driver in hand. I looked up and down the dark street looking for that fez. I found it and approached the family saying only one thing, "Doctor? Doctor?" The boy looked up, and said nothing. I raised my sonic screw driver and said, "I heard you need one of these." He slowly reached forward and took it. His father asked, "Where did you come from?" I told him, "The Future. I'm the 12th Doctor and I'm here to help." At which point, I shook his hand and faded into the night. That was the singular most gratifying moment of any Halloween - The moment I actually got to be The Doctor, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to have done so.
