Justice and Mercy: A Scriptural Reflection
We often plead for justice, but in truth, we desire mercy. The Scriptures declare, “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8). Justice is the foundation of God’s throne, yet mercy flows from His heart.
When we are wronged, we cry out for justice — that truth would prevail and righteousness be restored. But when we are the ones who have fallen short, we bend our knees and seek the mercy of God. Like the psalmist, we pray, “Enter not into judgment with Your servant, for in Your sight no one living is righteous” (Psalm 143:2).
God, in His perfect wisdom, unites justice and mercy at the cross. There, justice was satisfied, and mercy was extended. The punishment of sin was borne by Christ, that mercy might flow freely to those who believe. “Mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13), not because justice is denied, but because it is fulfilled in love.
Therefore, as followers of Christ, we are called to walk in that same balance — to act justly toward others, yet to love mercy in our dealings with all. For we have received grace upon grace, and as freely as we have been forgiven, so must we forgive.
