One of the biggest threats to academic freedom in the UK is your leadership @DrJoGrady, of @UCU. You don't defend the academic freedom of academics in the UK unless it suits your politics. You were, and are silent about, or dismissive of the attacks on Profs Stock, Freedman, Phoenix, Todd and Ben-Gad. Your supporters in the union tried to get me dismissed because they didn't like my views on fairness in sport. Branches of UCU try to close down book launches, and complained of @Docstockk 'weaponising employment law' when she defended herself against bullying that your supporters cheered on. And your supporters lined up with the employers when @JoPhoenix1 was contructively dismissed from the OU. No one should or will take you seriously on academic freedom. And this is not just a political shot at you. It is *dangerous* for academics in the UK not to be able to rely their union to defend them, unless they toe the line. In this respect, you have quite a lot in common with the CCP. This talk about marketisation might figure in a good faith discussion of academic freedom. But you are not a good faith actor, because you don't consistently support basic academic freedom rights for those you claim to represent.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the biggest threat to academic freedom in the UK is the marketisation of higher education. The accusation here could not be more serious: that the university traded important research on human rights violations in China, for access to the Chinese student market. theguardian.com/education/20…

Much deserved. @profserious is a real candidate for our 'Hero' of the year. Few university heads have such an uncompromising approach to free speech and academic freedom. Any thoughts, any other names @UniversitiesUK ? @StudentAFAF @ProfDHayes @CityUniAFAF @lucaf_london
The two heroes of October 2025 for @AFAF_freespeech are @profserious and Michael Ben-Gad. Both do @CityStGeorges really proud. afaf.org.uk/heroes-and-zeros…

This is terrifying. Did anyone see Macron's statements? European leaders have pledged to 'retake control' of social media with a 'European agenda of protection and regulation'. He insisted that Europeans should only trust 'established news outlets'. Yeah - because the biggest threat facing Europe is definitely frustrated peasants talking about all the foreigners attacking them and destroying their country - not the politicians and their open-borders policy that put them there. How can anyone believe that online safety is about 'children'? It is about safety for the political class. spectator.com.au/2025/11/mac…

Postgraduate Group invites UK/Ireland master’s & PhD students to join a non-partisan push for free speech in universities. Founded by @heatherthefair to combat self-censorship, it’s growing fast. Thoughts on academic freedom today? @NEU_Leadership
Please do join us, we are a non-partisan group of students of all ages who aim to improve free speech in our Universities in the UK and Ireland. Statement from our founder @heatherthefair: "I formed SAFAF because I was tired of self-censoring myself and being afraid to ask questions. Questions which I felt needed to be asked of my lecturers and the University. I knew other students were struggling, so, with the help of @AFAF_freespeech, we created a student arm. That arm has flourished, and we have on-campus representation and are growing every day. Now we have our postgrad group, which I'm proud to be a member of myself, only by coming together can we ensure free speech lives on in our higher education institutes".

If I was @Cambridge_Uni, I'd be having quiet, robust and preemptive words with @yourcambridgesu college heads, and the JCR presidents about @CUSocOfWomen. Some of those words would be 'zero tolerance of bullying and harassment', and 'legal obligations'.

BREAKING: Word reaches us that @Cambridge_Uni has ordered its sports clubs to comply with national sports governing body rules that protect the female category. In September, we highlighted the grossly unfair rules that allowed male rowers to compete in university college boat crews – in breach of the Equality Act 2010. In one egregious example, a town boat club affiliated to @BritishRowing allowed student clubs to include males in their female boats – against British Rowing rules. We understand that sports clubs were told in no uncertain terms that if they continued to flout the law the university could dissolve the club and would not stand by any officers of clubs that might be on the receiving end of legal action. Last week, at an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Cambridge University College Boat Clubs there was a vote on whether to comply with the law. According to one report: ‘They were informed by the University that there was a credible threat that they would be sued by well-funded pressure groups if they didn’t acquiesce to BR guidelines, and the university made clear they would not protect them legally.’ The vote to comply with the law and British Rowing rules was passed. Cue much outrage in the boat clubs along the Cam. ‘Anger is very much justified here,’ says one post on the Rowbridge Reborn FB group. ‘But I think the anger should be directed at the loathsome bigots – who, over the summer, began to dox transgender athletes at Cambridge with their photos and full details on their “women’s rights” forums.’ Here at Loathsome Bigot HQ we’d like to remind all sports clubs that flouting the law does have consequences. Female student rowers have lost on places in university college crews, and even places in the Boat Race squad, for over a decade. The grown-ups have finally stepped in. The law is there to protect women and girls. And that is why we do what we do. Over at The Other Place, @UniofOxford college boat clubs still have rules written in 2019 that allow males to self-identify into women’s boats. Perhaps it’s time for Oxford University to follow Cambridge and lay down the law?
Female rowers at Oxford and Cambridge Universities are being cheated out of their rightful places in college crews because both universities allow males to self-identify into women’s crews, in flagrant breach of the Equality Act 2010. Ten years after fielding a male in the Cambridge women’s reserve boat at the world-famous University Boat Races the rules for women at Cambridge still discriminate against females. The same is true at Oxford. At this year’s Cambridge University May Bumps two males competed in female crews at one college - Trinity. 1/5
