Pakistan’s parliament is about to vote on the 27th constitutional amendment which seeks to convert the government into a permanent military dictatorship.
It introduces several new clauses related to Pakistan’s military command structure:
1. Abolition of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee: The post will be abolished on November 27, 2025.
2. Creation of a new command post: The Prime Minister, on the recommendation of the Chief of the Army Staff (also serving as Chief of Defence Forces), will appoint a Commander of the National Strategic Command from the Pakistan Army and determine his salary and benefits.
3. Lifetime privileges for top military ranks: Officers promoted to Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force, or Admiral of the Fleet will retain their rank, privileges, and uniform for life.
4. Protection from removal: These officers, considered national heroes, can only be removed from office through the procedure outlined in Article 47 of the Constitution (which deals with the removal of the President).
5. Legal immunity: The immunities provided under Article 248 (for the President) will also apply to Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force, and Admiral of the Fleet.
6. Duties after command: Once their command term ends, the Federal Government will assign their future roles and responsibilities in the national interest.
This really is cultural torture. Imagine you were part of Mamdani’s win — knocked doors, phone banked, and even overcame a series of abductions and attacks from the state — and then on election night it’s reported you won in a landslide. Then the vote counting is stopped and in the sloppiest, most brazen way, it is simply declared the next day that actually Andrew Cuomo won.
That’s what happened last February in Pakistan, with the full support of the United States and the Biden administration.
Now their Cuomo is rewriting the Constitution to add a 27th Amendment effectively making him dictator for life. Trump called him “my favorite field marshal.”
