You're not going to like my answer. They did need to move left, but not to "the white populist Bernie left," but to "POC populist left" that stayed home last November on purpose. Nothing is gained and everything is lost by doing things the way Bernie would have done them.

As much as I hate HOW (not why) they ended the shutdown, I realize the American electorate has the memory of goldfish and most will blame the GOP in 2026 for their skyrocketing premiums.

The fact that Dems had to negotiate for a full year of SNAP funding is not a win, its speaks the cruelty of Republicans. Also there will be no more shutdowns so snap would have been funded anyway via a CR or appropriations if they did their damn jobs.

The Dems won the shutdown fight!
- This "fold" won't matter at all in next years midterms but making the GOP own the dogshit BBB/tariff/health care policies will
- This is not an example of Dems "not fighting like Republicans" it's a longer shutdown than anything the kamikaze Tea Party ever did!
- The people who are mad about this are a small subset of the electorate that treat politics like sports and its possible that their crying about the fold will contribute to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
- There was no path to getting the Obamacare subsidies back because the GOP controls everything and was never going to do it and they are fake populists. Dems should run against them on that topic and they have a great case study now. MTG helps with that.
- The fact that there was no getting Obamacare subsidy extension endgame was obvious at the start and anyone setting that expectation was lying to people.

Being in the party that has to constantly rescue people from Republicans cruelty is exhausting. Federal workers deserve to get paid, get their jobs back and of course people need their SNAP benefits.
But a vote on the ACA subsidies is for show because it needs 60 votes.

My prediction for 2028 is that AOC will probably run, but she will discover that while she is likely the most popular politician in New York state, the rest of New York state is nevertheless purple & red and will make it more difficult to win everything than she'd thought.

House Republican leadership will bring the chamber back into session 36 hours after senate passage. So, if Senate gets done today, weโre probably looking at Wednesday return for the House.
House Republican leaders will want to do this bill under a rule, which means rule committee meeting, rule debate, rule vote.
Have to also imagine theyโll want a conference meeting after nearly two months out of session.
