New piece at @TheArgumentMag concerning the problems with firing people for off-duty speech and political participation, including what to do about it. Link below.
Cities across the country are finding they can’t hire enough cops, which is hurting their ability to respond to 911 calls and solve crimes.
But some have found a smart solution: Hire civilians to do jobs that don’t involve danger. Sound familiar?

California's retaliatory gerrymandering is really important for fairness.
It's not that any side is "clean". It's that we should ask "who are we even helping?" if liberals choose to maintain Principled Opposition.
That's why I debated @KelseyTuoc on it.

Not seeing a lot of coverage about how we have a nationwide police officer shortage. Feels like investing in that would be better for crime prevention than having national guard troops take selfies with tourists.

In our October survey at @TheArgumentMag, 42% (!) of people said healthcare was a top-two issue for them, second only to cost of living (which was at 62%).
Republicans choosing to let healthcare costs explode would be very, very bad politics.
It would be an absolute gift to Dems if the lesson Republicans took from tonight was that they need to nuke the filibuster to open the government and not address the Obamcare subsidies issue.
“At its core, the fear these legislators have is that they will no longer be able to extract concessions from developers — concessions that mean fewer units, shorter buildings, and more expensive housing for everyone.” theargumentmag.com/p/local-c…
Something stuck out to us in our survey: every single survey we've run has seen women show more liberal attitudes than men on, well...everything.
*Except* immigration.

Not having good data on what drugs are safe in pregnancy has made being pregnant harder than it needs to be.
I argue in @TheArgumentMag that we should solve this problem by enrolling more pregnant women in RCTs.

When I first got this pitch I thought the author must be insane (though I knew very little about the issue).
After reading it, I now am in total agreement and can't believe I ever had a different opinion.

People naturalize women's propensity to vote for left-of-center parties but that's a relatively recent phenomenon!
It's almost as if women are people and people change their minds.
"One of the strangest things about discussions over gender and politics is how inevitable people imagine those differences to be."

But most of all, it seems odd to argue that we've entered this era of populist, post-material, post-welfare state politics after an election where cost of living was the top issue and Republicans just took an ax to Medicaid.
