Answer. I worked full time while starting my side gig. Back then it was just fun. I pursued streaming because I loved it. Schedule: 5 am: wake up 6 am: at Netflix HQ 4 pm: leave HQ 4:20pm: hang with kids 7:00pm put kids to bed / read to them -------- 3 nights a week I did streaming from 8pm to ~midnight, sometimes later I truly did it for the love of the game and I wouldn't recommend anyone to this lifestyle, but I wanted it. I absolutely abused myself and my body because on the weekends I wanted to be with my family. During this time I had three kids and later on my wife was pregnant with a fourth. It was absolutely one of the harder parts of my life, but I would not trade it for anything
Dad developers. How can you even work at home when you have a kid and a pregnant wife who are always interrupting you? Yes, I have my own office. But it seems like they are mistaking it for a hallway or something.

In bed at midnight, up at 5 is truly brutal. How old were you? I could pull this off in my 20s, not sure I could in my 40s.

Did your wife stay at home to take care of the kids or how did you do it?
yes, she stayed at home taking care of the kids, which meant we had a lot less _stuff_ and vacations i don't care about vacations and luxuries so that helps

One must recognize, however that not all men are such chads.

i never say these things because i hate prefacing culture. there is always a 1000x corner cases that i have not even considered, and as programmers we should most certainly understand corner cases better than the average i just try to speak to the 80% because too much nuance on internet sucks and is impossible to express

Whatever the role or context, being able to handle pain from a significant workload for a prolonged period of time will always pay off, as long as you are "directionally correct" on what you are working towards. Family typically is a positive lever in this.

Admirable dedication. I see it often when people had to sacrifice something to pursue an obsession or just passion. Happened to me as well.

I'm experiencing this right now, juat not with streaming. I'm starting to think this period of high pressure and stress is part of creating good men.

And that's how it's done. If you really want it, you will find a way.

Legend. Super impressed with what you've done. Every time I stream, I end it with the most excitement and biggest smiles. Have to work a little harder on my prioritization, though.

I can do this, but not consistently. I give up, languish for a bit, then go back to it. It's no joke brutal.

How old were you during the early yt/netflix era?

This is ideal, but baby wakes up 3-5 times a night I assume this is best for once they're out of that stage?

I’ve actually given up professional dev because of two kids and I am for the most part the primary caregiver as my wife (medical field) has a busy schedule where she CANT work from home.

@ThePrimeagen I saw your podcast with Lex Fridman where you talked very candidly about your bad habits in your youth and how you turn your life around, and now you are talking about your work ethic and the sacrifices that you have to make to succeed. You are really a source of inspiration, I wish more young people would listen to your story. I ,myself always wanted to ask you ,what is your source of inspiration, what makes you so determined to always keep going?

Have a similar story, probably not as hardcore as yours. For me it was building my bootstrapped SaaS on the side, while working a full-time job, with a newborn kid at home and my wife working part-time too. The grind was real, after work, in the evenings, or sometimes really early in the morning (I would wake up at 4am, work on my business till 8am, then shower + go to "work"). Free weekends almost didn't happen, vacation time very rarely. Same as you, I wouldn't trade it for anything. It has been the wildest ride so far, especially once the business started generating profits. I have learnt in a few years what would otherwise take decades. And now I am back at the starting point - working on new projects. This time with more experience, and money. I can enjoy now evenings and weekends with the wife and kids, which I couldn't before.
