The Canadian Senate is another scathing example of the disproportionate nature of Canadian representation. Senators are charged with approval on legislation, what is often referred to sober second thought. Senators are appointed by the governor general as recommended by the PM. Members of the PMs party are usually chosen, however, there has been a trend in recent years to have some sit as indepenent (no party affiliation). 🤭 I chuckle about the lack of party affiliation part because it's very much tongue-in-cheek. Being appointed to the Senate is a very good gig and often a perk of having the PMs favor. Past party support and donations also play a part. Senators are paid very well and have generous expenses paid for, with no accountability to who they represent and no requirement to step down until 75 years of age. Alberta has worked towards an elected senate for years, in the interests of making them more accountable to their region. This initative has been largely ignored by the rest of Canada and the PMO. Elections for nominees to be appointed to the Senate are non-binding, but usually respected. September 2024 Justin Trudeau appointed two Senators for Alberta, none of which were those democratically elected senators-in-waiting. This federal government, in particular, never passes on an opportunity to thwart Alberta's attempts to increase regional fairness & accountability to the Senate. tnc.news/2024/09/03/trudeaus… Justin Trudeau has appointed 88 Senators so far. lop.parl.ca/sites/ParlInfo/d… There is talk of the Senate, as it sits now, being able to block legislation indefinitely, should a Conservative government come into power. Their allegence isn't to the voter, it's to the party that appointed them. The unelected & regionally unfair Senate is another example of how our system can be weponized to hurt future governments and keep the province of Alberta, literally powerless within confederation, along with our western neighbours. The one thing the Trudeau government has done well is expose the weaknesses in our system and how the unethical can abuse it. The Senate, as it is now, certainly qualifies.
