4 yrs of ' work experience '? That's exploitation of a disabled, vulnerable person. He needs 4 years of back pay, a new contract and paid employment. Otherwise a tribunal beckons.

The government line is to deny benefits for disabled people to "encourage" them into jobs. This is how most employers treat disabled people because they can get away with it.

This is awful @waitrose , you certainly are showing your true colours of late with your terrible treatment of staff. This lad deserves much more respect, of which you show none. "Work Experience" for four years? Sorry, that is not work experience that is exploitation and slave labour. Does @waitrose condone slave Labour?

You are an absolute disgrace, @waitrose. You have basically used this young man for unpaid labour, which you clearly thought he was able to do, and now when paid work is mentioned, you cast him aside. You are utterly despicable, and one can only conclude this is discrimination.

By "couldn't do the full role" they mean couldn't be called to operate a till as well. That's discrimination. Disability is a protected characteristic in the Equality Act 2010. And there's a serious legal question over their exploitation of his unpaid labour for FOUR YEARS.

Over four years unpaid labour is ridiculous. Perhaps a few months unpaid work experience but then should be followed by a salary.

@waitrose was just looking to use disabled kids as free labour because they could get away with it, so many of these schemes teach disabled people to devalue themselves as if their work isn't worth pay like everyone else's.

Sadie have Waitrose contacted you?
Replying to @TravisSadie
@waitrose Shame on you. It was alright for him to work for free, but when it comes to paid work you said he couldn’t do the job. I know many employers and organisations are unaware there are NINE protected characteristics under the Equality Act, but disability is one of them.

Doesn’t matter how many ‘Employment Advisors’ you force on GP surgeries. This will happen! Sort out the employers! @wesstreeting / overlap minister for Care! @SKinnock This young man gave his all and must now feel rejected.

Waitrose has just accented how free labour can be exploitable. #DWP want to take those who suffer from #MentalHealth issues off benefits & into the workplace. Either via PAYE or Placement. However, with attitudes like that manager on productivity targets - hardly any get employ.

But @waitrose were happy to exploit the young man for 4 years.... What a despicable thing to do.... I will no longer shop in Waitrose and would others with an ounce of compassion, to do the same.

@sainsburys @asda @Morrisons your cheadle shops are always short staffed. There is a very experienced, capable, enthusiastic young man here who would add a lot of value to your stores. Shame on you #waitrose #waitrosecheadlehulme

My youngest son is autistic and attends a SEND school. This week there was a workshop at the school for parents and children to talk to organisations re a pathway and support as the children move into adulthood and hopefully a career. It was so positive - then you read this.

My colleague's son has Downs Syndrome & works part time (paid!) for Dunelm and they have been wonderful with him. Waitrose could take a leaf out of their book.

What is Money? A means of exchange? No it’s the theft of other peoples labour. @Waitrose is a disgrace considering the prices they charge for their ‘food’ A fair days pay for a fair days work.

Sorry, what can't he do? Because there are plenty of supermarket staff who "only" (in quotes as what he does is harder than sitting on a till. I know, I've done both) stack shelves. They're taking advantage by saying he's only good enough if he's not being paid.

Can someone get me in touch with Frances? I don’t use Facebook but I am based in Stockport and I’m a neurodiversity consultant and I would love to use my platform and connections to get this in front of people at Waitrose. I am truly appalled

And the government blame disabled people for not working and want to take their benefits away... when this is how so many employers treat people. Its disgusting and so unfair. I've personally had similar experiences to this myself.

I would, unfortunately, suggest that he stop volunteering this is exploitative What @waitrose needs to explain is why offering him part time employment is impossible. He must have come under their insurance and complied with their H&S policies, or did they break their own rules.
