It's just crazy what Substack has done. What started as "Mailchimp + Stripe", at a time when social media had already killed off so much journalism, has today completely redrawn the map of elite discourse, spawned major media companies (eg Free Press), minted dozens of journalist millionaires, catalyzed the creator economy, massively contributed to the spread of ideas and culture, been a ballast for free expression, the list goes on. Now we take Substack for granted but it's good to remember how improbable their success was. Wildly important and impressive company.
