What’s driving the upcoming record breaking cold snap?? It’s widespread warmth (up-to 30F above normal) and intense blocking in the Arctic/ Greenland/N Canada. That is squeezing out the (tropospheric) Cold Polar Vortex and forcing it south deep into the US. While it may be tempting to blame Global warming-low Arctic sea ice-& Arctic amplification for this, the climate change component is likely enhancing, but is not the primary driver. Teleconnections to various natural oscillations (and the stratosphere) working in tandem are often the culprit in these high latitude blocks. Climate change simply piggy backs and makes the blocking - and amp’d pattern - more extreme. (But it does NOT make the cold air, colder which is a common misconception)

Yet again, a stellar on-air graphic and simple way to present a complex subject… I hope more broadcast mets follow the example you set.

I had an enjoyable summer splitting wood anticipating we will need it this year. Looking forward to getting the wood stove going!

You don't look any smarter by inserting the words "Climate change" in your post. This isn't 2010.

I live in Europe and noticed that after severe thermal anomalies in the Arctic, it gets cold in Europe after two weeks. We say that the Arctic is the kitchen of the weather!

Do you see this repeating again this winter?
Here in #WNC we'll be in the mid 60s Saturday and Sunday, with a high Monday of 28°.

Correct. It’s call the climate. It’s been happening for billions of years.

Cold start to winter, through January at least.

In other words, weather. 🦄🌈🦄🌈🦄🌈

It's very mild tonight in Scotland. I just went on a bike ride at 10pm. No jacket, gloves or hat. I wonder if that vortex is sending Florida weather across on the Gulf Stream?

So that's what's bringing in the forecasted 8.1" of snow to the North Country here in northern NY on Sunday, eh? glad I went to the store today!

Please describe how Amplification can 'boost' this blocking @grok is there a mechanistic theory at least?

Due to an excess of AIRCRAFT CLOUDS, the atmospheric processes are horribly disrupted, the jetstream is pumped 24/7/365 with AIRCRAFT SMOG, particulate matter, ultrafine dust and water vapor comparable to a volcanic eruption, weather patterns become distorted, extremes prevail

Of course climate change has to be the cause of even cold air outbreaks! We've come to expect nothing less from climate alarmists. Polar Vortexes are nothing new. This 500 mb chart from January, 1985 shows extremely warm temps in northern Canada and Arctic that pushed the polar vortex south to the Great Lakes region, bringing some of the coldest temperatures in the 20th century to the Midwest and east coast. In fact, it was warmer in northern Canada than the east coast. Was anyone insinuating climate change?

In fact another equally cold Arctic outbreak occurred just in time for Christmas 1983, when abnormally warm air in northern Canada and the Arctic as shown by the strong High Pressure, displaced the polar vortex bringing a hard freeze to FL and Tampa saw a temp of 19. So although rare, these displaced Polar Vortexes are just a normal part of the winter weather pattern. Climate change? Nothing to see here.

This is weather forecasting, not climate forecasting. The alarmists have tried to hijack this reality for years, and it's costing a fortune.
