20,000 bricks make up the average 2 storey new house & all we ask is that 1 of them has a hole in it - to save a species and preserve an entire category of birds who live alongside us. Labour hated the idea to put a 3 line whip against it. Talk about betrayal.

A hole in a brick in the wall of a house? Creating a cold bridge? That sounds like a very poor idea.
It isn’t a poor idea. They’re used all the time and they work. And they comply with safety standards.

I mean, on one hand yea I don’t think it should be federally mandated. On the other, I love the idea of promoting living along side wildlife in harmony. Hopefully the swifts get their homes.

the problem is that unless national scale installation happens, the birds don’t really have a hope in hell so that is why the legislation is deemed necessary by all those working to conserve nature. As Zac says, it’s not as though he’s ’pro regulation’ generally there’s a need

Hi @HamzaYassin3 I thought of this lady when I watched one of episodes. She’s a brilliant campaigner for Swifts. 🤍🖤🤍

What is wrong with Labour, seeing the swifts arrive is one of the joys of Spring.

That’s what Labour said in their speech when they supported the first swift brick amendment when in opposition. Please tell your MP! Or email me at thefeatherspeech@gmail.com for an automated template. The swifts def need you.

There is absolutely no reason why this cannot be agreed. Keep fighting. You will succeed in the end.

Is this the final say on the matter? The vote I've seen was confined to a very small number of our representatives. Having watched bird life in my city decimated over the last 20 years I am fully behind this measure - and I suspect that the majority of UK people are also for it.

The problem is, once the birds move in the house becomes protected, meaning the home owners are not allowed to disturb the birds, for example, no alterations to their home that might cause disturbance to the birds i.e. no noise or vibration, nothing that would disturb them during nesting season etc. etc. These rules are very restrictive (and protected by criminal law), and things most people don't realise until you have them in your property. There are other places/potential homes for the birds i.e. bird boxes etc., that can be placed away from buildings that would be better for all.

£20 for a hole in a brick? That's £5m/year across all new builds. The cost can't be reduced to £1 per brick?

20,000 bricks? How big is the house?… the average 2 bed house takes on average 6000 bricks to build at least try and make it credible!!!!!

Drill a hole in bricks then. Why do you need a law? The government doesn't have to be decent for you.

The national federation of builders are pretty happy with the outcome…. britbuild-magazine.co.uk/beh…

13k to be precise but yes check how many swift bricks are manufactured? Last memory was they cost between £30-40

One brick mandated by fussy do-gooders is too many, on principle. New house buyers are already saddled with a laundry list of social "problems" they have to help fix, they don't need one more. If you want to look after some birds, do it on your own property

Considering I’ve lived through a government with Jacob Rees-Mogg in it, it’s a remarkable observation that this is the government I’ve despised the most.

"20,000 bricks make up the average 2 storey new house" "the average UK common brick is about 0.72 kg of CO2e. That's over 14 tonnes CO2e per new house - just for bricks. About time to build eco-friendly park homes. Let's design nest boxes for swifts for them.

This does NOT stop every local council who wants to do so from mandating them at a local level in new developments. What it DOES do is retain local freedom for local councils to enforce mandates based specifically on their own local biodiversity needs in the area.

Hannah, as someone who had nesting swifts right by my bedroom window, literally hearing the babies snoring before they fledged, I'm stunned they won't agree this. I can only assume it's because they don't have a friend that makes the bricks......
