Fossilized skulls of Pleistocene dwarf elephants found in coastal caves of Italy and the Greek islands may have inspired the myth of the Cyclops. During the Pleistocene epoch (2.6 million–11,700 years ago), falling sea levels formed land bridges that allowed elephants to migrate to islands. When sea levels rose again, populations became isolated, adapting to limited resources and evolving into smaller species. These miniature elephants varied by island — those on Cyprus stood about six feet tall, twice the size of the Sicilian and Maltese species. Human arrival around 11,000 years ago led to their rapid extinction through hunting. Centuries later, Greeks and Romans encountering their large skulls — featuring a single central cavity for the trunk — likely mistook it for a massive eye socket, giving rise to the Cyclops legend. Thus, paleontology and mythology meet in the fossils of these ancient creatures. © Reddit #drthehistories
