Afreximbank Calls for Greater Trade Finance Capacity in Africa @afreximbank allafrica.com/view/group/mai…
We officially opened #ATFS2025 with a powerful address from Ms. Gwen Mwaba, Managing Director of Trade Finance & Correspondent Banking at Afreximbank. Ms. Mwaba set the tone for this year’s seminar, highlighting the importance of collaboration, resilience, and innovation as Africa navigates an era of global protectionism. “Abidjan is a fitting host for this seminar. Cote d’Ivoire’s economy has shown resilience and dynamism with sustained growth, rising regional integration, and a track record of policy stability. The city of Abidjan itself embodies progress and openness, serving as a gateway to West Africa and a hub of finance, logistics and innovation. Hosting this event here underscores our collective commitment to expanding cross-border trade, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and accelerating the development of modern, inclusive financial ecosystems.”, she expressed. Who controls Africa’s trade finance-and why isn’t it African banks? At the Annual Africa Financial Summit (AFIS) in Casablanca, Haytham El Maayergi, Executive Vice President, Afreximbank, joined Thierry Hebraud of Mauritius Commercial Bank, Rabah Rahmani of Zenith Bank France, Cheryl Buss of Absa International, and Xavier Jopart of McKinsey & Company, in a discussion moderated by Eden Harris of the Financial Times to discuss how African banks can take the lead. Mr. El Maayergi noted that Africa’s liquidity often flows through international banks, weakening local capacity. Redirecting funds to African institutions, he said, will strengthen balance sheets and expand trade financing. “This is Africa’s moment,” he added. “Never waste a good crisis - let’s finance our growth from within.” #Afreximbank #AFIS2025 #TradeFinance #AfricaTrade #AfCFTA #PAPSS
