my working theory is that creative people already have the idea for their life’s work years before they find the right form factor to express it
Drop the “signaling” Just “virtue” It’s cleaner

This essay accomplishes so many things: 1) genuinely interesting look inside a generational startup people care about 2) culture & recruiting lighthouse for Cursor (and shows their poach process works) 3) great format that builds on Colossus’ serious yet tasteful new media brand
I spent the last 60 days working at Cursor. It's been one of the most thrilling phases of my professional life. There's a lot of mystique around the company. Over the last two months, some things matched my expectations; many did not. I wrote an essay for @joincolossus about things that have surprised me about the company and its culture so far. joincolossus.com/article/ins…

that Sydney Sweeney look everyone’s raving about? it’s a classic death stare perfected in your teenage years when you shouldn’t be impolite or talk back to authority so you find other means

every new form factor needs a new use case but not every new use case needs a new form factor

but instead of marketing campaigns & reels it’s handing someone a piece of paper after closely observing their wedding/poetry reading/eid celebration/ dinner party
STORYTELLING AS A SERVICE is the hottest girl at the party right now
Not creation or consumption but a secret third thing; something too difficult to name, too hard to describe. Too intimate to be consumption, too scared to cross the line into creation. But the line is a circle and it’s leading them back to each other.

Never underestimate how much people just want to be on a winning team.
Also, he’s got smarts. He’s a gamer. New York City is full of gamers, and game respects game.

Entertaining Figurehead theory of politics: people are happy Mamdani won because his youthful, charming, irreverent energy is exciting, and no one really believes he’ll be able to enact any truly crazy policies, but now everyone gets to watch this social media movie play out.

storytelling is the ultimate compression algorithm for human attention. everything else, data, logic, tech feeds into it, but if you can’t wrap it in a compelling narrative, nobody will give a shit. people think they make decisions based on facts, but they’re mostly responding to the shape of a story, whether it’s a personal arc, a company vision, or a product pitch. if you want to accomplish anything meaningful, the story is the interface between it & the world. get that wrong & nobody will give af. get it right & you bend steel with your bare hands.
Storytelling is one of the most underrated skills in tech. Everyone’s building. Few can explain why it matters.

people who really bet on you will bet on you consistently. people who are fair-weather fans will show sporadic interest in betting on you, based on the public evidence and social proof surrounding you at a moment in time.
