#OneCall #10Minutes #SavingCountlessLives
1. On 31st July 2018, while attending my farewell at the National Security Council Secretariat, I received an urgent call from the Indian Navy at around 1630h.
#Kerala was drowning. The
#IdukkiDam had breached danger levels.
#Ernakulam district, home to over 40 lakh people, was at an
#immediate_risk.
2. There was no actionable geospatial data available and no agency was responding either, to provide accurate time critical inputs, as per
#IndianNavy . The "margin of error":
#zero.
3. In those next 10 minutes, relying only on open-source maps and my
#geospatial background, I designed and dictated a real-time disaster response strategy to the Southern Naval Command.
4. Key decisions had to be made — fast. Some critical ones, which had impact were :-
A. Delaying water release based on weather forecasts (Toughest call).
B. Identifying safe areas for evacuation, using terrain contours.
C. Advising against use of Kochi Airport for aid logistics — foreseeing it would be submerged.
D. Proposing the use of telecom location data to identify stranded civilians by asking them to send their location on whatsapp along with mention of urgent medical needs (e.g., insulin, dialysis, cardiac patients, critical care patients, pregnant ladies) — which were to be plotted on GIS, in real time, for precision rescue operations. This would help focus efforts of rescue teams.
E. Asking people to charge mobiles and use only one per household to help conserve batteries.
5. For the next few days, I worked voluntarily, continuously supporting the rescue efforts leveraging my professional expertise.
6. Taking full and absolute responsibility for every recommendation should things go south was the most crucial aspect in this entire situation — because in crisis, delay kills. The
#IndianNavy later called it a “silent but significant contribution” and formally acknowledged it as “selfless yeoman service.”
7.
#IMPACT: Countless lives were saved with few casualties.
8. While the fear of unknown did exist, the God's blessings allowed me to make quick assessments and take
#ImmediateAction with
#Conviction.
This wasn’t about rank, recognition, or protocol. It was about saving lives:
#Countlesslives.
#9. If anything from that experience is worth remembering — it's this:
"Leadership is not about control. It's about showing up when it counts, acting with clarity, and owning your decisions — without fear of retribution."
I thank, (1)
#IndianNavy for the opportunity for believing in me at that critical juncture; (2) all those who contributed to my learnings; (3) the
#IAF which taught me to act swiftly and decisively when the
#Nation needed it the most; and, (4) the
#IndianArmy upbringing which taught me to think
#groundup.
🇮🇳 Jai Hind.
