I have two google voice numbers. They were created about 5 minutes apart, but other than that have no numeric or sequential relationship and are never used together. I regularly get the same spam attempt on them about 5 minutes apart. I assume Google is wholly compromised.

thing is, it’s a one-way road. Once you start getting them, it’s so hard to get them to stop. Literal quality of life demotion

I started tracking who was selling my email address by using Gmail. Assume your email address is XXXX@gmail dot com. You could enter XXXX!facebook@gmail, XXXX!intuit@gmail, etc. Emails will all still go to XXXX@gmail. So, when you start getting spam, you’ll know who sold your email address or got hacked.

There are low-level H1B and offshore workers who have db access and they regularly scrape this information and sell it.

So Intuit sells you identity protection and monitoring services as part of TurboTax and Credit Karma while also selling your personal information to third parties. That's certainly an approach...

Customer numbers are likely being sold by an underpaid, overseas contractor with far too much system access.

Was it online verification or over the phone? Maybe the rep stole your contact and sold it?

Same thing happened to me when I typed in my number into my LinkedIn settings. I thought better of it and didn't hit confirm. Didn't matter. They captured it anyway.

Are you surprised? All these companies sell your data on the side for a few extra bucks.

Oh yeah, literally any corporation you give your number to is selling right away. I can't tell you the crazy offers I've gotten for my customers' info.

was there some scandal recently where quickbooks claimed to have AI do the work for you and AI in this case meant "actually Indians." A scam centre was looking at your photos and typing them up by hand.

we blanket block intuit with a bounceback that says something like 'due to fraud coming from Intuit we have been required by our insurance to block this domain, please send legitimate invoices through other means."

I get a "job offer" at lease twice a week. I also get sale calls, and when I ask where did they get my number they say LinkedIn, where I have set the number to private :/

remember, shouting racial slurs at the spammers, even robots, helps you get off mister bones's wild ride quite quickly, they don't like associating with racists

Nothing has driven me to the extremes like an Indian fuck calling me while I'm fucking sleeping. I work 3rd. Call me at 2:00 pm without it being an emergency and I immediately want you to flayed, burned, and butchered. If I ever meet a scam caller I will chew their face off.

iiiiiiiinteresting. I heard some... interesting rumours about the makers of Quickbooks the other day... Let's just say the perfect way of hiding the fact that you're turning bad money into good money would be to make the accounting software.

I had two lines for years. 1 phone used to get spam calls and one didn’t. I forgot the phone that gets spam calls at work and had to call the cops for traffic incident. After I gave them my number (one that doesn’t get spam calls) I literally stated getting them the next day.

Now subsitute Quicken with any other company. They all sell your data - it is HUGE business. YOU are the product. Also, you agree to all of it in the EULA and privacy disclosure. You either agree to it or you do not get to use it - *THAT* is the problem to fix.

Fun fact - append your email with a +QuickBooks before the @ sign or with whatever product you are signing up for, and when they sell your email you'll know who

Thats what mozilla relay is for. or get a cheap mvno number and change it often. This wont save you from DST though... only a plane ticket or political action can do that.
