Recruiting our second engineer and had a call with an American living in Berlin
We got to salary negotiations and I offered €35K
He laughed and said “is that per month?” in an annoying Texan accent
I explained that it is annual and actually very competitive for a senior engineer in Germany
He said he was making $220K at his last job in San Francisco plus equity
I explained that sharing equity creates unhealthy incentives and I myself own only 12% after our seed round with a local family office
He called me an euro loser and hung up
That’s exactly the problem with the US tech, unrealistic compensation expectations that create market bubbles
I will never work with Americans again
