WE BROKE THE GAME... and it was EPIC. 🤘
This Saturday morning, we put the Ruttigers Almanac TTRPG (from
@WhittersRichard ) to the ultimate TEST.
I didn't just run a game; I wrote a 10th-level grimdark Christmas one-shot called "The Sanguine Solstice" specifically to find the system's limits. And my crew was more than happy to help me break it.
THE CREW:
Don "Kain" (The Juggernaut): Our AC 23 Soldier/Guardian tank.
"DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" was repeated more times than I can count, IYKYK...
Steve "Silas" (The Gloomstalker): A Prowler/Assassin "broken build" designed for one obscene alpha strike.
Gavin "Thane" (The Blood Fueled God): Our Wytch 10, walking in with a +14 to his casting roll, daring the game to make him "fizzle."
Alex "Daeraek" (The Divine Bulwark): A video game RPG addict and TTRPG newcomer, built a "min-max" Cleric 10.
EPIC HIGHLIGHT #1: "Why not just drink a mana potion?"
Our biggest complaint from our last playtest was the magic "Fizzle" rule (failure on a 1-11 roll), which Gavin hated.
So, the scenario threw Incorporeal Wraiths at them that our tank and rogue literally COULD NOT HIT. It was all on the casters. Gavin, cornered and facing a "Bane" on his roll, had his big moment. He used Spell Burn intentionally taking 17 damage to force his spell through and save the party. He LOVED it.
Right then, Alex, the newcomer, chimed in with the quote of the night: "This is stupid. Why would you pay HP? Why not just drink a mana potion?" "Mana potion?" said the other three player and myself almost in unison. We explained "Son this ain't no video game, we ain't got no mana potions!" 😆
The table exploded. It was the perfect, hilarious clash of OSR grit vs. modern video game logic. (No, Alex, there are no mana potions in Ruttigers. Only blood, grit, and bad decisions.)
EPIC HIGHLIGHT #2: The Newcomer Saves the World
The final boss fight against "Grandfather Yule" was insane.
Silas (the Gloomstalker) went first, landing a massive 30+ damage alpha strike. We thought it was over.
The boss, not dead, went next and used his Charm ability... on DON.
Suddenly, our AC 23 Jugger"NOT" was the boss's personal BODYGUARD. It was a total party crisis.
Gavin (the Wytch) and Steve (the Rogue) were panicking. It all came down to Alex, the video game "min maxer."
He calmly looked at his sheet, found the Dispel cantrip , and (thanks to his +14 casting bonus) unleashed it with 8 RANKS of power! INSTANTLY freeing our tank. The table went WILD. The newcomer saved the veterans from a total TPK!
THE VERDICT:
This system is 10/10.
Break20 is still the best critical hit system ever. Don was one shotting fodder monsters and cheering.
The "GM Fiat" feel of Threat Dice? SOLVED. We used them for Lair Actions and Boss Traits (like the Charm!) , and it felt tactical, not arbitrary.
The magic "Fizzle"? SOLVED. The scenario's design + the Spell Burn rule make it a feature, not a bug.
Check out the pics of the session! You can see our setup and the awesome "fog of war" reveal we did using black sand.
Good Time Were Had! 🤘
