tbh is there really much benefit to learning to code from books? I've seen people do it (mostly older people i suppose) but I've always found a good website to be much more convenient to learn from

It is now. When I learned C the web was very young. Tutorial sites didn't really exist yet (:

Same. That and a whole lot of trial and error. I actually learned x86 Assembly first from a printout of a PC BIOS, a pile of PC clones and a Dallas Semiconductor NVRAM chip. Good times.
