HAQ starring
@yamigautam &
@emraanhashmi in lead roles is a well-made, hard-hitting, & impactful film that is a fictionalized version of the iconic Shah Bano case where a landmark verdict was delivered by the Supreme Court of India in 1985. Based on the book ‘Bano: Bharat Ki Beti’ written by Jigna Vora, HAQ has been well-written & adapted for the big screen by
@ReshuNath & well directed by
@Suparn as the writer-director duo touch upon sensitive topics in a rather nuanced & mature manner with over dramatizing or sensationalizing things. However, what really works for the film are the fantastic performances by the lead pair who are in top form.
@yamigautam is an actress that I have always admired (right from her first film VICKY DONOR) and continue to do so especially for the bold & unconventional choices that she makes year after year. After the impactful
#Article370 last year & the fun-filled
#DhoomDhaam earlier this year, Yami delivers a knock-out performance once again in
#Haq as the aggrieved Shazia Bano who is out to seek justice for her right to maintenance after being suddenly divorced by her lawyer husband Abbas Khan (played superbly by
@emraanhashmi ). The gradual transformation of
@yamigautam ‘s character from a woman smitten in love to a woman out to seek justice has to be seen to be believed & hats off to her for pulling off such a complex role effortlessly.
@emraanhashmi is fantastic delivering one of his career best performances in this one – the best part about Emraan’s performance is that he keeps things restrained rather than resorting to the typical villainous tropes which would have made this character gimmicky. Among the supporting cast, Danish Hussain (as Yami’s father) is brilliant and his scenes with Yami provide for some of the film’s best and most heart-warming moments. Debutant Vartika Singh is quite confident too though she gets limited scope.
@ChadhaSheeba (as advocate Bela Jain) is effective as always &
@aseemjh (as advocate Faraaz) is quite good too. The only minor issue that I had with the film is that it gets too talk-heavy especially in the second half and the pacing is also rather slow which is why even a short duration of 2 hrs 15 mins appears to feel much longer. The music by
@VishalMMishra is quite good too with ‘Qubool’ (sung by Armaan Khan) & ‘Haq Hai Mera’ (sung by Vishal himself) being the pick of the lot. Overall, HAQ definitely merits a watch in theatres for its impactful story-telling, nuanced direction by
@Suparn & terrific performances by
@yamigautam &
@emraanhashmi
